NIMC Initiates Investigation into Alleged Data Breach by XpressVerify.

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has launched a thorough investigation into allegations of a citizens’ data breach purportedly perpetrated by XpressVerify.

This directive came from the Director General of NIMC, Abisoye Coker-Odusote, as disclosed in a statement released on Sunday by the Commission’s Head of Corporate Communications, Kayode Adegoke.

NIMC clarified that XpressVerify is not among the Commission’s licensed partners for National Identification Number (NIN) verification services. Despite this, concerns arose regarding the security of citizens’ data, prompting swift action from NIMC.

In reaffirming the integrity of Nigeria’s National Identity Database, NIMC assured the public that there has been no data breach of any kind. The Commission emphasized the safety and security of citizens’ data within the national identity database.

According to the statement, “The Director General and Chief Executive Officer of NIMC, Engr. Abisoye Coker-Odusote has promptly ordered a comprehensive investigation into the matter to find out if any of the Commission’s Tokenisation verification agents has in any way breached the licensing agreement either directly or through any of their sub-licensees.”

This move follows a previous order for a full-scale investigation into the matter by the National Commissioner of the Nigeria Data Protection Commission.
