Since assuming power last May, a staggering total of 6,931 lives have been lost across Nigeria under the leadership of President Bola Tinubu, according to reports by Vanguard, citing media sources. This alarming figure underscores the gravity of the security crisis gripping the nation.

Comparatively, during President Muhammadu Buhari’s first ten months in office from May 2015 to March 2016, Nigeria witnessed the loss of 8,356 lives to insecurity. Similarly, during former President Goodluck Jonathan’s initial ten months as elected president from May 2011 to March 2012, insecurity claimed 2,059 lives.

These statistics, sourced from the Nigeria Security Tracker (NST), a Council on Foreign Relations Africa program project, illustrate the devastating impact of violence in Nigeria driven by political, economic, or social grievances. However, it is crucial to note that these figures may be conservative, as some killings often go underreported or entirely unreported.

Recent months have seen a surge in military operations targeting terrorists and bandits. In January 2024, troops reportedly killed 266 terrorists and bandits, while in February 2024, they neutralized 974 terrorists. Despite these efforts, recurring attacks by bandits continue to ravage states such as Zamfara, Niger, Kaduna, Katsina, Kebbi, as well as various North-East and North-Central regions, resulting in the deaths and kidnappings of thousands.
