Why I’m not among lawyers defending Tinubu’s mandate — Keyamo

 

Festus Keyamo (SAN), Minister of State for Labour and Productivity, has explained why his name is absent from the list of senior lawyers defending President-elect Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s victory.

Recall that the All Progressives Congress (APC) released a list of 50 attorneys to defend Tinubu on Tuesday.

Wole Olanipekun, former president of the Nigerian Bar Association, is leading the legal team. The legal legend will lead 49 other attorneys in defending Tinubu’s victory before the presidential election tribunal.

 

Olanipekun, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, SAN, joined forces with other legal luminaries to ensure Tinubu’s victory over his archrivals, Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and Peter Obi of the Labour Party, LP, who have challenged his election.

Tinubu, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), won the presidential election held on Saturday, February 25 with 8,794,726 votes, surpassing Atiku and Obi, who placed second and third with 6,984,520 and 6,101,533 votes, respectively.

 

Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, presented him with a Certificate of Return on Wednesday of last week.

In a post on his verified Twitter account on Tuesday, Keyamo, who is also the spokesman for the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council, explained the omission of his name from the 50-man list by stating that the Nigerian Constitution prohibits serving ministers from assuming such roles.

 

He noted that active cabinet members cannot join the Election Petition team until after the transfer date of May 29.
