Workers’ Day: FCTA withdraws NLC permission to use Eagle Square
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) was granted permission to host the 2023 workers’ celebration in Eagle Square in Abuja, but that permission has been revoked by the Ministry of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
This occurs just three days before International Workers Day on May 1.

Comrade Emmanuel Ugboja, general secretary of the NLC, reported that the FCT minister resigned in a letter sent to the congress on Thursday via an agency under his administration.
The Minister wrote in the letter that the withdrawal was due to preparations for President-elect Bola Tinubu’s inauguration on May 29 at Eagle Square.
Emmanuel Ugboaja stated, “They have revoked permission and refuse to speak with us. The FCT Minister has revoked our permission, and it is evident that he is speaking on behalf of his government.
“It indicates that the government does not wish to address the workers, so they do not value the work the workers have performed over the years, but we will not fail to value ourselves.

“The cancellation has no effect on workers, as the celebration will still occur, but not in Eagle Square.” Workers will observe their day from the NLC to every corner of the nation.
“They claimed that the Eagle Square would be ready for use on May 29, but we will find it to be incredibly lousy. This is not the inaugural event. Over the past two decades, we have had between five and seven inaugurations and have always celebrated May Day in Eagle Square.”
He stated, “Workers should anticipate the worst.” The indicators do not point to a bright future if we do not exert effort. The 1st of May will therefore be a rallying cry for us to prepare for the challenges we anticipate in the future.”
