Supreme Court to deliver judgment in Osun guber election dispute May 9

 

The Supreme Court set Tuesday, May 9, as the date for its decision in the disputed July 16 governorship election in Osun State.

After hearing arguments from the parties involved in the case, the Supreme Court set a 24-hour deadline for the delivery of the judgement.

The incumbent Governor Ademola Nurudeen Adeleke, who ran on the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP platform, and Adegboyega Oyetola, the All Progressives Congress, APC, governorship candidate, are at the centre of the disputed election.

While Oyetola is the Supreme Court appellant, having lost at the Court of Appeal, Adeleke is the major respondent, having won the Court of Appeal decision.

The Supreme Court will issue its final decision by 2 p.m. on May 9.

On Friday, March 24, the Court of Appeal in Abuja vacated the tribunal decision that nullified the election of Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke.

The appellate court, in a unanimous decision by a three-member panel of Justices, held that Adeleke’s appeal against his dismissal by the Osun State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal was meritorious.

Aside from overturning the tribunal’s decision, the court awarded N500,000 in costs to the All Progressive Congress, APC, and its candidate, Gboyega Oyetola, in its lead judgement delivered by Justice Mohammed Lawal.
