Federal Government’s Meeting with NLC and TUC Leadership Sparks Hope for an End to Nationwide Strike

The meeting, held on Wednesday, involved the Minister of Labour, Simon Bako Lalong, and the Minister of State for Labour, Hon. Nkeiruka Onyeajeocha. Taking place at the office of the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, the gathering aimed to address the concerns raised by the organized labour.
The nationwide strike was initiated in response to the brutalization of NLC President, Joe Ajaero, in Owerri, Imo State, on November 1. The labour unions demand the arrest and prosecution of the suspected political thugs responsible for the attack on President Ajaero and other workers protesting unpaid salaries.

The strike, which commenced on Tuesday, has already had a significant impact on economic activities in various parts of the country.
After the meeting with the labour leaders, Minister of Labour Simon Bako Lalong expressed optimism, stating, “The meeting was in respect to what happened, especially in Imo State, and this meeting has heavy security considerations, which is why we took the meeting at the office of the National Security Adviser.
Lalong elaborated that after extensive discussions, the labour leaders agreed to report back to their constituencies and consider suspending the strike.
TUC President Comrade Festus Osifo echoed this sentiment, revealing that the Federal Government had made appeals and promises during the meeting, potentially paving the way for a suspension of the strike.

Osifo stated, “They made several appeals and promises to us, so we said let’s go back and reappraise all the conversations we have had, and we will communicate accordingly.”
