Reports reveal a disturbing trend of violence and insecurity plaguing schools and communities in the region. From Wednesday, March 6th to Monday, March 11th, numerous incidents of mass kidnappings and deadly assaults have shaken the nation to its core.

According to Amnesty International, the notorious Boko Haram terrorists orchestrated one of the largest abductions, seizing over 400 individuals, including women and children, in Borno State. The victims, primarily displaced persons from the Gamboru Ngala council area, had ventured out in search of firewood when they fell prey to the extremists.

In a separate attack, bandits stormed Government Secondary School and LEA Primary School in Kuriga, Kaduna State, on March 8th, abducting more than 280 pupils and teachers. The assailants, armed and ruthless, unleashed chaos and terror upon the community, leaving a trail of devastation in their wake.

Tragically, the violence extended beyond school grounds, as witnessed in the Buda community of Kajuru Local Government Area, also in Kaduna State. There, over 61 individuals were abducted, and at least four lives were lost in the ensuing chaos.

The horror continued in Sokoto State, where armed assailants targeted a boarding school in Gidan Bakuso village, snatching approximately 15 children from their beds while they slept.

Additionally, communities in Benue State suffered grievous losses, with over 50 individuals, including an entire family of seven, brutally murdered in an attack on Gbagir community in Ukum Local Government Area. Similarly, in Wa-ndoo, a community in Mbalom, Gwer-East Local Government Area, armed herders launched a deadly assault, claiming the lives of at least 16 residents.

These relentless attacks have reignited fears and tensions across the country, particularly in school communities. Since the infamous abduction of over 200 schoolgirls in Chibok village in 2014, schools have become prime targets for criminal elements seeking ransom and inflicting terror upon innocent civilians.

In response to the escalating threat, parents in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, have expressed grave concerns over rumors of impending attacks on schools in the region. With reports circulating of planned assaults in Bwari Area Council, parents are demanding urgent action from government authorities to safeguard their children’s lives and ensure adequate security measures are in place.

Meanwhile, in Kaduna State, the Federal Government has adamantly refused to negotiate ransom for the release of the abducted students and teachers from Kuriga. However, offers of assistance from international allies, including the United States, have been received and are under consideration as efforts to secure the safe return of the hostages intensify.

As Nigeria grapples with the harrowing aftermath of these atrocities, urgent steps must be taken to protect vulnerable communities and restore a sense of security and stability to the nation.
