Andrew Okungbowa, who held the position of Chief Press Secretary (CPS) to Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State, has tendered his resignation. The announcement, made on December 4, 2023, comes just five months after Okungbowa assumed the role on July 25, 2023.

Andrew Okungbowa cited dissatisfaction with his treatment as the primary reason for stepping down. In a concise three-paragraph letter addressed to Governor Obaseki, he stated,

“I write to formally inform you of my resignation from my position as CPS to the governor, with immediate effect.

I am most grateful for the privilege and opportunity to serve the governor and the state. Please, accept my kind felicitation.”

Reports suggest that the catalyst for Okungbowa’s resignation was his perceived unequal treatment compared to social media influencers within the Government House in Benin.

He found the governor’s preferential treatment of influencers unacceptable. Despite efforts by high-ranking officials to mediate and dissuade the CPS from resigning, Okungbowa remained resolute in his decision.

It has been revealed that Governor Obaseki personally met with Okungbowa in Lagos, urging him to join his media team to support Crusoe Osagie, the Special Adviser on Media Projects, in preparation for the crucial September 21, 2024 gubernatorial election.

However, the CPS alleged that he was later subjected to disrespect, further solidifying his resolve to resign from the position.
