Bandit Attack Claims the Life of Prominent Islamic Leader in Birnin-Gwari

 

Malam Yakubu Muhammad Bugai, Vice-Chairman of Jama’atu Izatatul Bid’ah Wa Iqamatus-Sunnah (JIBWIS) in the Brinin-Gwari branch, tragically passed away due to injuries sustained during a bandit attack on his farm. The incident occurred in the Rema area of Birnin-Gwari on Wednesday.

After being shot by the bandits, Malam Yakubu Bugai was rushed to Jibril Mai-Gwari General Hospital on Thursday. Sadly, he was pronounced dead due to the gunshot wounds inflicted during the attack.

The Chairman of Birnin-Gwari Emirate Progressives Union (BEPU), Ishaq Usman Kasai, expressed deep sorrow and confirmed the tragic event in a statement. The late Mal. Yakubu Bugai played a significant role in the Birnin-Gwari Orphans Foundation, an organization dedicated to caring for numerous orphans left behind by victims of armed banditry in the region.

 

BEPU’s statement further highlighted the alarming rise in abductions and kidnappings of innocent farmers in the local government area. The bandits recently struck Unguwar Bawa in Randagi Ward, kidnapping 28 individuals, including women and children, on Friday, July 21, 2023. Subsequent attacks on Tuesday, July 25, 2023, near Eka Farm and on Wednesday, July 26, 2023, in Unguwan Roka of Kakangi Ward resulted in nine people being kidnapped, and one person was killed.

Additionally, four locals were kidnapped from their farms in Yelwa Community, Sabon-Layi axis, while on Thursday night, July 27, 2023, the bandits struck Unguwan Danfulani, killing one person and kidnapping seven members of a single family.

The situation has caused grave concern for the farming community, as approximately 70% of farmlands in the area have become inaccessible, posing a significant threat to this year’s farming outputs.

BEPU urgently appealed to the Federal Government for the establishment of military detachments in Katakaki, Gagumi, Tashar-Keji, and Bugai axis of the Western part of Birnin-Gwari to tackle the escalating banditry crisis.

Efforts to reach DSP Mohammed Jalige, the State Police Public Relations Officer, for comments on the incident were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report.
