Peter Mbah, the governor-elect of Enugu state, the commissioner of police, and a number of other officials fled during the presentation of INEC Certificates of Return.

 

Following a loud explosion on Thursday in the hall where the Independent Electoral Commission (INEC) issued Certificates of Return to those who won various electoral positions in the most recent elections, they scattered in various directions for safety.

Mbah, his deputy, Ifeanyi Ossai, 23 members-elect of the Enugu State House of Assembly, as well as hundreds of supporters and security chiefs, had gathered in the banquet hall of the Bon Platinum Hotel in Enugu for the presentation.

 

During the middle of the presentation, there was a loud bang in the room that caused the audience to flee in a stampede.

Sources who witnessed the incident told Ejes Gist Nigeria that the exercise resumed after a 30-minute pause, but many remained outside out of fear that the building would collapse.

“I did not return to the hallway. The sound was so loud that everyone believed the building would collapse within the next minute. This has never occurred in my entire lifetime. We give thanks to God that the worst did not occur “an eyewitness said.

An event attended by notable figures, including the outgoing constable, Mrs. Cecilia Ezeilo, and other dignitaries, was marred by an unusual interruption that turned a potentially joyous moment into one of anxiety.

 

Mr. Kenneth Ukeagu, INEC National Commissioner for the states of Enugu, Ebonyi, and Imo, spoke at the event and urged the newly elected officials not to disappoint the people who gave them their mandate.

He stated that the commission was committed to conducting credible elections using modern technology such as the Bi-modal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) in order to meet the expectations of the people.
