Imo State Director of DSS Urges Vigilance and Unity Against Rising Insecurity

The Department of State Services (DSS) has drawn a connection between the escalating insecurity in the Southeast region of Nigeria and criminal activities masked under the guise of Biafra agitation. Imo State’s Director of DSS, Wilcox Idaminabo, revealed this perspective during a one-day stakeholders roundtable organized by the Centre for Transparency Advocacy (CTA) focusing on the forthcoming November 11 governorship election in Imo State.

Idaminabo unequivocally stated that the rampant destruction and loss of lives in the region were not products of legitimate Biafra agitations but were the outcomes of pure criminality. In light of this, he called upon traditional rulers, clergymen, and Igbo leaders to collectively address and condemn the scourge of insecurity that has enveloped the Southeast.

He emphasized, “What is going on in the Southeast is criminality wrapped around the ideology of Biafra. Biafra is not synonymous with violence or destruction, especially when some traditional rulers and religious leaders find it challenging to remain within their communities. There is no authentic Biafra movement to be found.”

Elaborating on the grave situation in certain parts of the Southeast, Idaminabo recalled an operation in Orsu, which revealed a grim scene characterized by headless bodies and abandoned vehicles, painting a grim picture of the prevailing crisis.

Idaminabo also raised questions about the recurring threats of boycotting elections in the region, pointing out that such actions fuel suspicions of political sponsorship.

Over the past few years, the Southeastern region of Nigeria has been marred by insecurity issues that are intrinsically linked to the prolonged detention of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), and the broader Biafra agitation. This wave of insecurity has brought about unfortunate incidents of violence, kidnappings, and loss of lives, deeply affecting the lives of the people in the region.

The DSS’s stance in attributing the crisis to criminality rather than a genuine Biafra movement highlights the need for a comprehensive approach to address the underlying issues and restore peace in the Southeast.
