The EFCC is expected to interrogate Emefiele further, and fresh charges may be filed against him as the investigation unfolds. Dele Oyewale, the spokesperson for the EFCC, has not provided official confirmation as of now.

Godwin Emefiele had been in DSS custody since June, following his suspension by President Bola Tinubu. He was accused of various charges, including “illegal possession” of firearms, but these charges were later withdrawn. Instead, a new 20-count charge was introduced, alleging conspiracy to commit procurement fraud, among other offenses.

Emefiele had reportedly proposed a plea bargain agreement, involving his resignation as CBN governor and relinquishing certain assets. Subsequently, on September 22, the Central Bank officially confirmed Emefiele’s resignation, and Olayemi Cardoso was appointed as the substantive governor of the CBN.
