Federal Government Intensifies Efforts to Alleviate Poverty and Boost Economy, Says FCT Minister Nyesom Wike 

Abuja, Monday – The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Mr Nyesom Wike, emphasized the government’s commitment to enhancing the nation’s economy as a crucial step towards tackling poverty, a major contributor to rising insecurity.

In a media interaction on Monday, Wike underscored the interconnectedness of poverty, the economy, and criminality, describing them as two sides of the same coin.

Nyesom Wike articulated, “You cannot talk about poverty without talking about the economy. If the economy is good, it means a lot of things will function well and that will be able to reduce poverty. When the economy is working well, there will be a lot of employment creation.

When the economy is good, businesses will thrive, and this is what the current government is trying to do.”

Highlighting the government’s efforts, Wike mentioned subsidy removal and other economic policies aimed at revamping the country’s economy, which has faced challenges for an extended period. He urged Nigerians to be patient, assuring them that the measures implemented would lead to tangible improvements in the long run.

Acknowledging the role of poverty in fueling insecurity in the FCT and the nation, the minister stressed that poverty was not confined to the FCT alone. He explained that addressing poverty within the territory was closely tied to national economic reforms, emphasizing that the FCT Administration’s decisions would consider broader economic implications.

While acknowledging the limitations in immediate impact, Nyesom Wike highlighted potential avenues for job creation within the FCT, including investments in agricultural production, skill acquisition, and information and communication technology.

He noted that such initiatives could contribute to alleviating poverty but cautioned that results might not be instantaneous.
