First picture released of Rebecca Ikumelo who died following Brixton concert crush

The first image of , a woman who died after being hurt in a crush at a concert at Brixton Academy has been made public by police.

Rebecca Ikumelo, 33, of Newham, east London, passed away early on Saturday, and two other women, 21 and 23, are still in critical condition.

Following the incident on Thursday night in south London, eight people were injured and taken to the hospital.

The Afrobeat artist Asake was performing at the venue when police were called, according to reports of a “large number of people attempting to force entry to the venue”

After three songs, the Nigerian musician was forced to leave the performance. In a statement, he expressed that his “heart is with those who were injured”

Asake wrote on Instagram after Ms. Ikumelo passed away that he was “devastated by the ” and that he had spoken to the victim’s family.

He wrote, “I am overwhelmed with grief and could never have imagined anything like this happening,”

“My team and I are still waiting for the complete debrief from the venue management and the police in order to figure out exactly what caused all the disruption and, ultimately the death of Rebecca.

According to the Met Police, an urgent investigation is being conducted, which includes searching through “vast” amounts of video on social media and officers’ body-worn cameras.

The police investigation into the incident at the Brixton Academy has been painstaking and forensic in nature from the outset, and I can assure Rebecca’s family and friends that this work will continue for as long as necessary, said Chief Superintendent Colin Wingrove.

An MP has demanded explanations for what caused the crowd to swell.

It is obvious that ticketing and security procedures did not function as they should have in order for this incident that led to the death of Rebecca Ikumelo to occur, according to Florence Eshalomi, Labour MP for Vauxhall.

“We need answers about exactly how this happened and safeguards against it in future.”

“This is a deeply troubling incident,” she continued, “and it has turned an occasion that should have been a celebration into a very sad day.”
