Iconic Labour Leader Frank Kokori Passes Away at 80 on His Birthday
Frank Kokori, the former general secretary of the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG), breathed his last at the age of 80. Kokori’s demise occurred at a hospital in Warri, Delta state, and remarkably, on the very day he celebrated his birthday.
Atawada Oke, Kokori’s personal assistant, officially confirmed the news of the former NUPENG leader’s passing. Kokori had been grappling with a kidney-related ailment over the past few months, and his health struggles came to a poignant end on Thursday.

The veteran labour leader, renowned for his unwavering commitment to the rights of workers, played a pivotal role in the historic struggle against the annulment of the June 12, 1993 presidential election. Kokori mobilized NUPENG workers against the annulment and the military junta, a courageous act that resulted in a nationwide petrol scarcity as workers halted the distribution of petrol.

His activism, however, came at a cost. Kokori was arrested and detained by the military government due to his role in the struggle for democracy. Despite facing adversity, Kokori remained resolute in championing the cause of justice and workers’ rights.
In the wake of Kokori’s deteriorating health, he raised an alarm on November 9 from his sick bed. Responding to the distress call, Sheriff Oborevwori, the governor of Delta, paid a visit to the elder statesman at the hospital. During the visit, the governor pledged the state’s support to ensure Kokori received high-quality medical treatment.
