Denies Extradition Request for

The Ghanaian government has refuted claims by Nigerian journalist that the Nigerian government was pressuring Ghana to extradite him back to Nigeria.

Hundeyin alleged that sought his extradition due to his exposé on alleged forgery of the Nigerian president’s academic certificate and involvement in drug trafficking in the US.

In a letter dated October 1, 2023, Kenneth Attafuah, Chairperson of the Ghana Refugee Board (GRB), clarified that neither the board nor the Ghanaian government had received any formal request from Nigeria for Hundeyin’s extradition.

Attafuah emphasized that it was not within the contemplation of the GRB to repatriate Hundeyin to Nigeria, as his concerns lacked supporting verification and were unfounded.

Attafuah acknowledged that Hundeyin’s allegations against the sitting president of Nigeria, made from Ghanaian soil, carried significant political and potential national security implications.

He urged Hundeyin to refrain from such conduct while exercising his profession as a journalist.

While the GRB has no intention of withdrawing or canceling Hundeyin’s refugee status, Attafuah emphasized the importance of Hundeyin obeying and respecting the laws of Ghana and adhering to the provisions of Rights and Obligations of Asylum Seekers.

Attafuah clarified that the GRB operates within the scope of its statutory mandate and applicable international law, making it unable to assume responsibilities beyond its designated authority.

He stated, “The GRB is completely unaware of any of the astonishing allegations of criminality you attribute to the President of Nigeria and the Nigerian Government or any of its security agencies.”

This response from the Ghanaian government underscores its commitment to upholding international law and maintaining diplomatic relations with Nigeria.

It also highlights the importance of factual accuracy and responsible journalism in matters of national and international significance.
