Ejes Gist News reports that Onanuga has faced scrutiny for his track record of spreading fake news and promoting tribal bigotry. Just recently, he was caught deleting a post in which he falsely claimed that President Tinubu had secured a $600 million investment deal with Maersk, a Danish shipping company. However, officials from A.P. Moller-Maersk promptly refuted any such deal, compelling Onanuga to remove the post amid backlash from Nigerians.

Ejes Gist News understands that the planned replacement of Onanuga is viewed as an effort by the presidency to distance itself from the controversy and regain public trust.
