IGP, Kayode Egbetokun Orders Full Investigation into Assault on, Joe Ajaero NLC President.

The Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, has taken swift action by ordering a comprehensive investigation into the alleged assault on the President of the National Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Joe Ajaero, in Imo State last week.

Ejes Gist News learned that the IGP has deployed the Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) in charge of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to lead the investigation into the reported assault.

In a statement released on Friday, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the spokesperson of the Nigeria Police, conveyed that Egbetokun has directed the DIG to assume control of the investigation to uncover the facts surrounding the incident and address any conflicting accounts that may exist.

Adejobi emphasized that the decision to investigate stems from the multiple versions of the incident received by the Police, underscoring the necessity of a thorough and unbiased inquiry to clarify the details.

“The Nigeria Police Force understands the importance of transparency and accountability in maintaining public trust,” stated Adejobi.

Assuring the public, particularly the organized labour leadership, Egbetokun pledged a meticulous and impartial investigation. He called for calm, assuring that he has personally intervened to address the issues surrounding the assault on Joe Ajaero,  NLC President.

“The investigation has commenced, and the Nigeria Police Force guarantees that it will be followed to a conclusive end, and appropriate actions will be taken based on the findings of the investigation,” Adejobi concluded in the statement.

The alleged assault occurred when Ajaero led a group of labour leaders from Abuja to Owerri, the Imo state capital, for protests against the state government’s alleged non-payment of salaries to some workers.

Joe Ajaero claimed the attack was carried out by police officers from the Imo State Command, while the Imo State Commissioner of Police asserted that the labour leaders were taken into custody when hoodlums attacked.

In response to the incident, the NLC and other unions declared a total strike in Imo State, threatening to escalate it to the national level next week if the police officers involved in the assault are not duly punished.
