ISWAP Distributes Old Naira Notes To highway Passengers in Borno
Before the deadline of the Central Bank of Nigeria’s (CBN) cashless policy, sources claim that suspected members of the Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP) have distributed enormous amounts of old notes to a large number of commuters in the Lake Chad Basin.
According to information gathered by our correspondent, the incident happened on Saturday in the Guzamala LGA of Borno State, just after Mairari village along the Maiduguri/Monguno highway.
Ejesgist.ng was informed by a source that the ISWAP members were outfitted in military camouflage and operated two gun trucks.
The rebels, according to a local named Bakura Ibrahim, stood by the roadside with bags of old naira notes and took cover under a tree.
We departed Monguno around noon. Since there were no checkpoints in the area as we got closer to Mairari, we were uneasy.
“They stopped us and inquired as to whether we were traveling to Maiduguri. They then began handing out 100,000 old naira notes to each individual, which we found hard to believe. Each passenger in the Golf Volkswagen, received the 100,000 according to Bakura.
A different source continued, “The group simply told us, “If you think you can go to their banks and change it to new naira, go and do so; may Allah make it advantageous to you.”
