Nigerian Religious Organizations Respond to Ranking as Most Dangerous Place for Christians.

 

Recent reports by the International Christian Concern (ICC) stating that Nigeria might be the most perilous place for Christians worldwide have sparked reactions from prominent religious groups in the country.

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN), and the Jama’atu Nasril Islam (JNI) have all expressed their perspectives on this alarming rating.

The ICC’s report highlighted a disturbing trend, detailing 55 attacks in Nigeria resulting in the tragic loss of 549 Christian lives during a four-month period from March to July.

 

In response, Ibrahim Kufena, the JNI secretary in Kaduna State, challenged the ICC’s statement, calling for specifics and instances of the alleged persecutions. He suggested that a lack of specific information could lead to misunderstandings and tensions.

Several church leaders also weighed in on the situation, expressing their concerns. The Anglican Church emphasized the importance of not despairing in the face of external attacks on the Church. On the other hand, CAN urged church leaders to reconsider their indiscriminate visits to government officials, as these could divert attention from more immediate issues affecting Christians, particularly ongoing persecutions in various religious communities.

The PFN highlighted the significance of considering the broader context surrounding religious persecution in Nigeria.

 

Simon Dolly, the CAN’s secretary for the North-Central Zone, called for a refocus of efforts by church leaders to address the pressing issues related to the persecution of Christians in Nigeria. This response indicates the gravity of the situation and the need for concerted efforts to address religious intolerance and violence within the country.
