Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has divulged that he thwarted a potential summer loan exit for goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher to comply with squad registration regulations.
Kelleher, who has been with Liverpool for eight years and ascended through the academy ranks, earned his spot in the senior setup in 2019 and has since served as Klopp’s backup goalkeeper.
Despite being overshadowed by the formidable Alisson in the goalkeeping hierarchy, the 25-year-old Kelleher has seen action in only 27 club games throughout his senior career. Additionally, he boasts ten caps for the Republic of Ireland.
Eager for regular playing time, Kelleher expressed his willingness to embark on a loan spell this summer. However, Klopp intervened, citing Kelleher’s invaluable status as a homegrown player.
Jurgen Klopp explained, “We had discussions in the summer about [moving on], but as long as we don’t have a solution, we cannot loan players. He is homegrown, and the first responsibility is to do the best for Liverpool, and then we have to see how we can sort it.”
The manager acknowledged the challenging situation for Kelleher, who desired more playing opportunities, emphasizing the club’s commitment to finding a resolution.
