Labour Party announces Lamidi Bashir Apapa as Acting Chairman of the party

On Thursday, seven members of the Labour Party’s National Working Committee announced the National Vice-Chairman (South), Lamidi Bashir Apapa, as the acting chairman of the party, replacing the suspended chairman, Julius Abure. This exacerbated the crisis that has been rocking the Labour Party.

As of the time of this report, stern-looking police officers have assumed control of the party’s secretariat.

Apapa stated, following an emergency meeting held at the party’s headquarters in Abuja, that the NWC members acted in accordance with the Federal Capital Territory High Court’s ruling that prohibited Abure from parading himself as the LP’s National Chairman.

In addition to Abure, the court restrained three other party officials for alleged forgery.

Justice Hamza Muazu also ordered that the originating processes of the court be served on the detained officials, including Abure, Umar Farouk Ibrahim, Oluchi Opara, and Clement Ojukwu.

The judge determined that the ex parte application by aggrieved members of the LP for a temporary restraining order against four officials has merit and granted the same.

Apapa told the media that the NWC also reviewed the suspension of party members and executive committee members who had previously been suspended by the party leadership.

Alhaji Saleh Lawal—acting National Secretary, Rowland Daramola—acting Treasurer, and Prince Reuben Favour—acting Organising Secretary—replaced the three other restrained officials.

“The NWC also reviewed the fact that there have been some poorly handled suspensions recently. In addition, this National Working Committee meeting has reviewed the suspensions, and the officers are hereby reinstated.

“Effective immediately, the so-called party officers that the court has barred should not represent themselves as party officers until the party treats or handles the cases against them,” Apapa stated.

He also refuted the claim that the party has been infiltrated by the ruling All Progressives Congress, stating that the current leadership has a strong belief in the party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi.
