Lightning kills three secondary school students.
In a heartbreaking incident, lightning struck and claimed the lives of three Senior Secondary School (SS3) students in Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra on a fateful Saturday.
According to a witness, the unfortunate event occurred while nine male students were playing football barefooted on the school’s pitch. Although the coach had already ended the training session due to approaching rain, some students decided to continue playing football.

Suddenly, lightning and thunderstorms engulfed the area, and tragically, the boys were struck during this unexpected natural disaster.
Upon hearing the students’ screams and witnessing the incident, a teacher rushed to the field and promptly sought help. The injured students were rushed to the school clinic and later transferred to a hospital in Awka for further medical care.
Out of the nine boys affected, six were successfully resuscitated and are currently receiving treatment. However, three of them did not survive the lightning strike, and their parents have been informed of the tragic news.
The local community was left in shock when news of the accident spread on the following day, and concern for the survivors’ well-being grew.
In Awka’s hospital, parents and sympathizers gathered at the ward where the surviving students were undergoing treatment. An anonymous doctor shared that three of the boys had arrived at the hospital already deceased, but the remaining six had been successfully revived.
The doctor expressed the sorrow that the students were playing football barefooted, highlighting that wearing proper footwear might have minimized the impact of the lightning strike.
In the midst of this tragic incident, authorities stressed that this was a natural disaster and not a spiritual occurrence. Chukwudi Okani, a consultant pathologist at the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital, Awka, advised the public to consider installing thunder arrestors in their buildings to mitigate the effects of lightning strikes and prevent electrical accidents.
