FIFA employs a complex points calculation formula, which was revised in September 2023, to determine these rankings. The rankings are determined based on the total points earned by teams in competitive matches over a specified period. Consequently, a higher-ranked team has demonstrated a consistently strong performance in recent matches compared to its lower-ranked counterparts.

The champions of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), Senegal, hold the second spot in Africa and are placed 20th worldwide with 1600.82 unit points. Tunisia follows closely as the third-best team in Africa, positioned at 32nd globally with 1516.14 points. Algeria, the North African neighbor, stands at 33rd in the world rankings with 1512.9 unit points, just behind Tunisia.
