However, the former governor of Anambra State said in a statement made in Lagos just before taking a flight to London, United Kingdom (), for his appearance on Monday at Chatham House: “I, Peter Obi, a proud Nigerian of Igbo extraction, I am most truthfully and wholly committed to that stand of one united, secure, and progressive Nigeria.”

“Such extreme groups as Boko Haram and ISWAP will definitely and effectively be checkmated in a working Nigeria with equity, justice, and fairness.

“I personally think that a carrot and stick approach is the best way to deal with these situations that manifest themselves in the form of ambiguous nationalism, bigoted patriotism, and religious bigotry.”
