In a shocking incident, armed robbers targeted a bullion van belonging to the Ogun State Government, resulting in the tragic death of Taiwo Oyekanmi, an accountant in Governor Dapo Abiodun’s office.

The assailants, numbering five and clad in hooded attire, intercepted the van on the Kuto overhead bridge, shooting Oyekanmi and making off with an undisclosed sum of government money.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, Abiodun Alamutu, confirmed the incident and promptly ordered the blocking of all exit points from the state. Collaborative efforts with police in neighboring states have been initiated to track down the culprits.

Oyekanmi, the Director of Finance at the governor’s office, had withdrawn an undisclosed amount of money from a Fidelity Bank branch in Abeokuta. Tragically, he and other aides encountered the armed robbers while returning to the office. Sources revealed that the assailants, armed with firearms, shot Oyekanmi on the Kuto overhead bridge before fleeing with the government’s funds.

Despite being rushed to the State General Hospital, Ijaye, along with other aides who sustained gunshot injuries, Oyekanmi succumbed to his injuries.

According to an official statement, the police escort assigned to Oyekanmi was absent during the attack, having sought permission to attend to personal matters.

Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Tokunbo Talabi, visited the late accountant’s residence to extend condolences to the grieving family. Recounting the incident, Talabi explained that the robbers, after blocking the van on the bridge, shot the director and used a sledgehammer to force open the receptacle containing the money.

In response to the incident, Talabi directed the Area Commander to obtain CCTV footage from the bank, aiming to identify the culprits. He urged authorities to block all exits from the state to aid in tracking down the perpetrators.

Governor Dapo Abiodun expressed condolences to the victim’s family, acknowledging the significant loss to the state. Investigations are underway, with the hope that the CCTV footage will provide crucial insights into the identity and movements of the robbers.
