Enugu: Flood kills man few days to his wedding ceremony

A young man identified only as Chukwudi reportedly drowned on Sunday evening, June 11, at the intersection of Nkpokiti and Presidential Road in Ogui, Enugu.

Chukwudi was reportedly residing in one of the underground rooms sandwiched beneath a block of flats constructed to obstruct a channel through which water from the Institute of Management and Technology (IMT) and its environs collects and empties into the Asata River.

The deceased passed away as he and his fiancée prepared for their wedding, shortly after performing the traditional rites.

According to his neighbour, Mrs. Nkechi Eze, the flooding caused by the clogged drainage had persisted for over six years, causing a large number of residents to leave the area.

Mrs. Nkechi continued, “Yesterday, even though the girl and boy no longer slept there, the boy only came to inspect their property. Then it began to rain.

“The flood came, and he was the one who went out to inform people that it had returned. His fiancee and everyone else were present, but he stated that he needed to bring out his property.

“He entered and never came out again. A girl with hearing disablities who resided in one of the apartments nearly drowned, but she was saved by those who went to help.

According to the source, the police arrived around midnight and began removing water from the basement. Additionally, a water draining machine was brought, and they worked from midnight to five this morning.

“At 5 a.m., his lifeless body was discovered, and the police removed it. All of us had been waiting outside, without sleeping, to see the boy. Even an animal, let alone a human, cannot live here, according to the DPO.

The body of the deceased has been deposited in an undisclosed mortuary.
