A significant search effort is underway for numerous prisoners who fled a medium security facility near Nigeria’s capital, Abuja, after heavy rains caused a perimeter fence to collapse.

According to prison service spokesperson Adamu Duza, the incident occurred on Wednesday night, allowing at least 118 inmates to escape.

The torrential downpour, which persisted for several hours, wreaked havoc on the Suleja prison and adjacent structures, leaving authorities grappling to restore order.

“The public is further enjoined to look out for the fleeing inmates and report any suspicious movement to the nearest security agency,” Duza urged, emphasizing the importance of community involvement in the search.

While ten inmates have already been recaptured, efforts to locate and detain the remaining escapees are ongoing. Duza attributed the prison breach to the outdated infrastructure of the facility, describing it as a relic of the colonial era and citing its vulnerability to inclement weather conditions.

Prison breaks in Nigeria are not uncommon, often stemming from issues related to overcrowding, deteriorating infrastructure, and inadequate security measures. However, these incidents typically result from human intervention rather than natural causes. Duza underscored the urgent need for modernizing and reinforcing Nigeria’s prison facilities, pledging to replace aging structures to prevent future breaches.

In recent years, Nigeria has witnessed numerous jailbreaks, with one of the most notable occurrences taking place in July 2022 when approximately 600 inmates escaped during an attack on a high-security prison in Abuja by the so-called “Islamic State.”

Authorities are now intensifying their efforts to locate and apprehend the escaped prisoners, emphasizing the importance of collaboration between law enforcement agencies and the public in ensuring the safety and security of communities.
