Suspected kidnapper slumps, dies while trying to escape arrest in Bauchi

 

A suspected kidnapper who was a member of a ring responsible for the kidnapping of a 23-year-old student from Bauchi State University collapsed and died while attempting to evade capture at a military checkpoint.

Along with two accomplices, the deceased kidnapped the student and used a 2010 Toyota Camry to facilitate their escape with the victim.

When they reached a military checkpoint staffed by members of the 133 Special Forces Battalion based in Azare, Katagum Local Government Area, Bauchi state, their luck ran out. They were quickly apprehended by the military.

The deceased attempted to flee upon arrest, but suddenly collapsed. He was rushed immediately to the Federal Medical Centre in Azare, where he was pronounced dead by a physician.

On Tuesday, Ahmed Wakil, the Police Public Relations Officer of Bauchi State Command, issued a statement to the media regarding the incident.

Superintendent of Police Wakil confirmed that Special Forces Battalion troops had turned over the remaining two suspects to the police command.

 

Wakil stated, “Based on inter-agency cooperation to complement the constitutional mandates of the Police as the lead agency in maintaining internal security, six suspects were turned over to the Command by members of the 133 Special Forces Battalion headquartered in Azare, Bauchi state.”

The suspects kidnapped a 23-year-old student from Bauchi State University, Gadau, who resided in the Federal Low Cost area of Azare town, Bauchi state. They also stole a Toyota Camry 2010 (registration number withheld) and sped off in the direction of Misau.

“Immediately after receiving the distress call, military personnel stationed at the checkpoint intercepted the stolen vehicle alongside the suspects. The victim was saved without injury,” Wakil added.

He added that the suspects were found to be in possession of eight distinct mobile phones, knives, and various charms (juju). During the investigation, the suspects confessed to committing the crime. The police have initiated a covert investigation, following which the suspects will be charged and prosecuted in court.

Suleiman Samaila, a 32-year-old student at Bauchi State University’s Itas Gadau Campus, was arrested in a separate incident for causing grave bodily harm to a fellow student.

 

According to Wakil, a report indicated that on June 10, 2023, at approximately 5:15 p.m., a dispute broke out between students during an off-campus football match.

“Suleiman Samaila assaulted Safiyanu Adam Musa, a 23-year-old bio-chemistry student in 200-level coursework at the same institution. The victim’s left hand was severely injured as a result,” Wakil explained.

 

A police team visited the scene and transported the victim to the Federal Medical Centre in Azare after receiving the report. Currently, the victim is recovering from the severe wound he sustained during the incident.

 

Wakil confirmed that the arrested suspect has confessed to the crime and will be prosecuted in court once the investigation has been concluded in secret.
