Tension gripped the Ilejemeje local government secretariat in Ẹda-Oniyọ, Ekiti State, as heavily armed gunmen launched an attack on Tuesday, April 16. This incident occurred just four days after armed Yoruba Nation agitators invaded the Oyo State Government Secretariat in Ibadan.

According to reports, the attackers disrupted activities at the secretariat, prompting employees to flee for safety. The hoodlums, believed to have originated from the Obbo-Ayegunle community in neighboring Kwara State, arrived at the secretariat and began shooting indiscriminately.
Witnesses recounted scenes of chaos as workers scrambled to find refuge, with some sustaining injuries during the onslaught. The assailants also vandalized the secretariat building and other council property.

While the motive behind the attack remains unclear, ongoing land disputes between the two communities are believed to have fueled tensions in the area. The prolonged conflict has escalated into violence, culminating in the recent brazen assault on the local government secretariat.
During the prolonged attack, one individual sustained serious injuries and was promptly transported to the State Specialist Hospital in Iye-Ekiti for urgent medical attention. Sources revealed that the gunmen, armed with firearms, charms, and machetes, carried out the assault around 10:00 am, leaving residents fearful for their safety.
Speaking on the incident, the Eleda of Eda Oniyo community, Oba Awodipo Awolola, condemned the escalating violence and highlighted the urgent need for enhanced security measures in the area. He lamented the absence of a police post in the community and urged security agencies to deploy additional personnel to prevent further lawlessness.
As tensions remain high in the aftermath of the attack, local authorities are under pressure to address the underlying grievances and restore peace to the embattled communities.
