Chief Justice of Nigeria Calls on Legal Professionals to Lead National Development.
The Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Olukayode Ariwoola, delivered a powerful message during the opening ceremony of the 2023 Nigerian Bar Association-Section on Legal Practice (NBA-SLP) conference. He urged jurists and legal professionals not to remain passive bystanders while the country experiences deterioration, but rather to awaken to their vital role in charting a path for national development.

CJN Ariwoola emphasized the importance of honesty, transparency, and integrity in the legal profession. He called upon lawyers to distinguish themselves by fearlessly fighting for a just society. Recognizing the responsibility of senior advocates and accomplished lawyers, he encouraged them to mentor and provide guidance to their junior colleagues.
He firmly stated that it is crucial for senior advocates to make themselves accessible to junior lawyers as mentors, viewing any reluctance to do so as tyrannical.

Yakubu Maikyau, the Chairman of the NBA, announced plans to launch a new code of conduct for legal practitioners on January 1, 2024. The aim of this code is to combat corruption within the Bar, fostering an ethical and accountable legal community.
Paul Harris Ogbole, Chairman of the conference’s planning committee, highlighted the importance of utilizing the event to deepen knowledge about the impact of globalization on the practice of law. He emphasized the array of opportunities available to lawyers on the global stage, which would be unveiled and explored throughout the conference.
Chief Ferdinand Orbih, Chairman of NBA-SLP, addressed the audience by acknowledging the expanding legal landscape in the age of artificial intelligence. He urged lawyers to seize the opportunities presented by technological advancements and emphasized that the conference’s theme, ‘Legal Practice Without Borders,’ was chosen to engage with global issues of transformation in the legal profession.
