10 States Implementing Wage Awards for Workers

Not less than ten states have initiated wage award payments to their workers, as revealed by findings from The Nation.

Among the 15 states surveyed by our correspondents, Lagos, Ekiti, Oyo, Osun, Ogun, Ondo, Enugu, Ebonyi, Adamawa, and Jigawa are actively participating in this initiative.

Niger State recently approved the payment of N20,000 to each of its workers.

 

Following the removal of petrol subsidy and its associated challenges, the Federal Government, as part of its cushioning policies, commenced payment of a N35,000 wage award to its employees, covering a span of five months.

In a recent address, the President urged governors who had not yet implemented the wage award to commence the process, pending the conclusion of work by the Tripartite Committee on New Minimum Wage. He made this appeal while launching agricultural programs initiated by Governor Umaru Bago in Minna, Niger State.

Since the removal of petrol subsidy, federal revenue has seen significant growth, with over N1 trillion being shared among the federating units last month.

 

 

Governor Bago announced that workers in Niger State would receive N20,000 as part of the wage award starting this month.

In Ogun State, Governor Dapo Abiodun, whose administration has been disbursing a monthly award of N10,000 to civil servants, has extended this benefit to primary and secondary school pupils. Approximately 100,000 indigent pupils will receive N10,000 each from the government. Additionally, 20,000 students from the state’s tertiary institutions will receive N50,000 each, with payments expected to be completed this week.

Commissioner for Education, Science, and Technology, Prof. Abayomi Arigbabu, highlighted this initiative as part of Governor Abiodun’s strategy to alleviate the economic challenges faced by parents.

Lagos and Ondo states offer the highest wage award of N35,000 to their workers, while Oyo and Enugu follow closely with N25,000. Ekiti and Osun provide N15,000, while Jigawa, Adamawa, and Ebonyi offer N10,000.

Some states have also extended these payments to local government employees and pensioners.
