The New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) finds itself in the midst of a deepening crisis as the Board of Trustees (BoT) has officially ratified the expulsion of Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwanso, the party’s presidential candidate during the 2023 general elections.

This development further underscores the internal turmoil that has plagued the NNPP in the aftermath of the recent elections.
In addition to confirming Kwankwanso’s expulsion, the BoT has also ratified the dissolution of the Abba Kawu Ali-led National Working Committee (NWC) of the party. These decisions were made during a BoT meeting held at the Rockview Hotel in Apapa, Lagos.

Alhaji Abdulsalam Abdulrasaq, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, signed a communique issued at the end of the meeting, shedding light on the decisions reached.
The communique addressed several key points, including the constitutional framework of the NNPP, the status of the dissolved NWC, and various appointments within the party. Notably, it emphasized that no constitution amendment would be approved until after the 2027 general elections, underscoring the party’s commitment to its existing constitution.

Regarding the NWC, the communique stated, “The dissolved Abba Kawu Ali-led National Working Committee of the party which was constituted without due process and the laid-down provisions of the party’s constitution is dissolved, and INEC is to be notified immediately.
Furthermore, the document confirmed the expulsion of Sen. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso from the NNPP.
It also addressed issues surrounding the founder and former chairman of the BoT, Dr. Gilbert Major Agbo, and the dissolution of nine state and local government executive committees, nullifying these actions as they were carried out without due process and contrary to the party’s constitution.
In addition, the resignation of Dr. Boniface Okechukwu Aniebonam as the chairman of the Board of Trustees was accepted and ratified, with Dr. Aniebonam retaining his status as the Founder and life member of the Board of Trustees.
The communique acknowledged and ratified the elections of various party officials, including Dr. Gilbert Major Agbo as the national chairman and Mr. Abdulrazaq Abdulsalam as the national publicity secretary, among others.
Addressing external matters, the BoT urged the public to disregard expressions from the Kwankwasiya group led by Sen. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, asserting that these groups no longer have authorization to speak or act for the party.
Lastly, the BoT highlighted the need to carefully study the judgment of the Kano State governorship election petitions tribunal, which had implications for the NNPP’s candidate, Governor Abba Yusuf, and expressed an intention to approach the appellate court for necessary redress.
