The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has vehemently denied allegations of data breach concerning the National Identity Numbers (NIN) capturing process, assuring citizens of the safety and security of their personal information.

XpressVerify Website Shut Down After Selling Nigerians’ NIN Data by Namecheap

 

In a statement released on Sunday, March 17, the NIMC refuted media reports suggesting a breach of citizens’ data by a private organization named XpressVerify. According to the commission, XpressVerify is not one of its licensed partners, thereby absolving itself from any association with the alleged breach.

 

Kayode Adegoke, the Head of Corporate Communications at NIMC, emphasized the commission’s commitment to maintaining the integrity of citizens’ data. He stated, “We express our gratitude to our media partners and the whistleblowers for bringing this to our attention and wish to assure Nigerians and legal residents that there is no data breach of any sort and the Citizens’ data is safe and secure in Nigeria’s National identity database.”

XpressVerify Has Full Access to Nigerians’ NINs, Data, and Is Making Money From It

 

In response to the incident, Engr. Abisoye Coker-Odusote, the Director General and Chief Executive Officer of NIMC, has ordered a thorough investigation into the matter. The investigation aims to determine whether any of the commission’s tokenization verification agents have violated the licensing agreement, either directly or through their sub-licensees.

Engr. Coker-Odusote reiterated NIMC’s unwavering dedication to data protection and privacy. She assured the public that stringent security measures are in place to safeguard the NIN and other personal data of every citizen and legal resident. “Top-level security is in place to protect the NIN and other personal data of every citizen and legal resident,” she affirmed.
