The Delta Indigenes Initiative for Good Leadership (DIIGL), a prominent human rights advocacy group, has issued a compelling call to Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State. The group is urging the governor to promptly announce his commitment to the implementation of a ₦35,000.00 wage award for Civil and Public Servants in the state.
In a statement released today, DIIGL also appealed to the Delta State Chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and The Trade Union Congress (TUC) to initiate negotiations for a new minimum wage in light of the current economic challenges faced by Deltans.
The advocacy group expressed deep concern about the economic hardship experienced by workers in Delta State, exacerbated by the fuel subsidy removal announced by President Bola Tinubu on May 29, 2023.
DIIGL emphasized that the prevailing economic conditions have made it increasingly difficult for Delta State workers to cope, necessitating urgent action. The group asserted that the Delta State government should without any delay announce new minimum wages for the state’s workers.
The group also pointed to the increase in the monthly federal allocation to the state since the removal of the fuel subsidy.
As the economic landscape evolves, DIIGL underscores the importance of prioritizing the well-being of workers in Delta State. The advocacy group believes that implementing a ₦35,000 wage award is not only a moral imperative but also a crucial step in mitigating the financial strain on the workforce.
