Governor Akeredolu Faces 72-Hour Ultimatum to Hand Over to Deputy Amid Health Concerns.
The power struggle at the apex of Ondo State’s administrative hierarchy has escalated, with Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu facing mounting pressure to hand over the reins to his deputy, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, within 72 hours.
The opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has aligned with pro-democracy coalitions in urging Governor Akeredolu to resume his administrative duties promptly. The governor has been issued a three-day ultimatum to either return to office or delegate authority to his deputy, as stated by the PDP Forever Initiative during a press conference in Abuja.
The group expressed concerns about the governor’s prolonged absence due to health issues, asserting that it has created a leadership vacuum, disrupting the governance of the state.
National Coordinator of PDP Forever Initiative, Hon. Obande Gideon Obande, stated that their fears is not about Governor Akeredolu’s governing capability but his current health condition.
The coalition stressed the importance of adhering to constitutional provisions, calling for the governor to delegate power to his deputy to ensure the seamless continuity of governance. They warned of occupying the Ondo State Government House if the deadline is disregarded, accusing the APC of inadequate leadership both at the state and federal levels.
Hon. Obande highlighted the PDP’s historical commitment to upholding the constitution during similar governance challenges, citing the case of former President Umaru Yar’Adua’s illness and the subsequent empowerment of Vice President Goodluck Jonathan as Acting President.

The PDP Forever Initiative also criticised alleged interference by non-state actors, particularly those close to Governor Akeredolu, in Ondo State affairs, accusing them of obstructing the Deputy Governor’s constitutional duties.
Reaffirming their dedication to promoting good governance and constitutional adherence, the group called on all Nigerians, regardless of political affiliations, to support their quest for transparency and accountability in leadership.
