Stanley Ekezie, a prominent figure in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from Imo State, has attributed the current economic hardship in Nigeria to the decisions made by voters during elections.

In an interview conducted in Owerri, the state capital, Ekezie emphasized that Nigerians have themselves to blame for the prevailing economic crisis, suggesting that citizens opted for short-term gains over effective governance.

“Blame Nigeria’s electorate for the current economic crisis. Nigerians prefer to take peanuts in lieu of good governance,” Leadership quoted him as remarking.

Ekezie pointed out that during recent elections, there was widespread vote buying, with voters readily accepting monetary incentives from politicians in exchange for their votes, thereby facilitating the rigging of elections.

He stressed that those now lamenting the economic challenges should have anticipated the consequences of their electoral choices, indicating that voting for unqualified candidates would inevitably lead to difficult times.

According to Ekezie, the cycle of economic stagnation will persist as long as incompetent individuals continue to hold public office.

“The situation will persist so long as the wrong people continue to occupy the seat of power,” he affirmed.

Looking ahead, Ekezie highlighted the upcoming 2027 elections as another opportunity for Nigerians to select capable leaders who can steer the country towards progress and prosperity.

As Nigerians grapple with the repercussions of past electoral decisions, Ekezie’s remarks underscore the importance of making informed choices during future elections to foster sustainable development and alleviate economic hardships.
