INEC Extended deadline

The deadline for collecting Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) has been extended until Sunday, January 29, 2023, by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The election official previously set the deadline for collection as Sunday, January 22, 2023.

However, following a Thursday meeting, INEC announced an extension of eight days.

“The Commission is committed to ensuring that registered voters have ample time to collect their PVCs before the next election. In light of this, the timeline for the collection of PVCs has been extended by eight days, according to a statement from INEC National Commissioner Festus Okoye.

“Rather than concluding on the 22nd of January 2023, the collection of PVCs will continue until the 29th. Currently, the period of collection is daily from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm (including Saturdays and Sundays)

He explained that this signifies “a consequential adjustment to the collection by location:

Collection at the Registration Area (Ward) level is extended by one week, beginning on Monday, January 16, and ending on Sunday, January 22, 2023.

The Local Government collection period will resume from Monday, January 23, to Sunday, January 29, 2023.

Reports of INEC officials extorting Nigerians at collection centres, according to him, have prompted the Commission to launch an investigation into the allegations.

Okoye added, “Those found responsible will face disciplinary action and/or prosecution.”

“Similarly, the Commission is troubled by allegations of discriminatory PVC distribution in certain areas. This violates the law. All legitimate registrants are entitled to their PVCs and may use them to vote in any region of the country where they are registered on Election Day.

“Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) have been instructed to take immediate disciplinary action against violators and prevent such practices from occurring nationwide.”
