Google Doodle honours Maria Telkes ‘The Sun Queen’ of solar energy
Maria Telkes became an employee at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where she was a member of the Solar Energy Committee (MIT).
During World War II, the United States government approached her with a request for her assistance in developing a solar distiller that could transform saltwater into potable water.

Her collaboration with the architect Eleanor Raymond in 1948 resulted in the creation of the Dover Sun House.

Because of their success with the solar-heated home, they were featured in the media, which helped to popularise the term “solar energy.”
In addition to this, she has worked as a research assistant in prestigious universities such as New York University, Princeton University, and the University of Delaware on projects related to solar energy.

Maria Telkes holds over 20 patents and has served as a consultant for a wide variety of energy companies over the course of her career.
On this day in 1952, Dr. Telkes was honoured with the Society of Women Engineers Achievement Award, making her the very first recipient of the honour.
