ICPC Nabs Bank Manager Sabotaging Withdrawal Of

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has arrested the manager of a bank in Osogbo, the capital of Osun, over ATMs loaded with naira notes that could not be dispensed.

According to Azuka Ogugua, the anti-graft agency’s spokesperson, the cash bundles were loaded into the ATMs while still wrapped, and thus could not be dispensed through the machines.

 

1) President Muhammadu Buhari has stated that he would make a major decision on the redesign and distribution of the naira within one week. 2) Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, SAN, has expressed concern about the difficulty Nigerians are having in obtaining the new naira notes. The VP met with some FinTech players in Abuja on Friday to discuss possible ways to alleviate the hardship. To address the worrying situation, Osinbajo urged the Central Bank of Nigeria () and banks to deploy more FinTechs and money agents to the hinterlands.

4) Prof Ishaq Oloyede, Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, stated on Friday that there would be no extension of time for registration for this year’s Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination. The one-month registration window for the UTME closes on February 14, and Oloyede, speaking during an inspection tour of some JAMB computer-based centres in Osogbo, Osun State, said the inspection was to ensure that clients were not extorted.

5) The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency has asked religious leaders to join the anti-drug abuse campaign by incorporating the message into their sermons. This, it claimed, would protect millions of young people from the threat. Brig.-Gen. Buba Marwa, the agency’s chairman and chief executive officer, gave the charge while hosting a religious delegation, Jama’atu Izalatil Bid’ah Wa Iqamatus Sunnah, in Abuja.

6) The Academic Staff Union of Universities’ National Executive Council plans to meet soon to discuss their members’ withheld eight-month salary arrears, this online newspaper has reliably learned. 7) The Imo State Police Command said on Friday that the gunmen who killed the president of the customary court, Nnemeka Ugboma, last Thursday in Ejemakwuru, Oguta local government area, were five in number. 8) Godwin Emefiele, Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, yesterday appealed to Nigerians to be patient as supply disruptions make it difficult to withdraw cash from banks. Emefiele made this appeal during a press conference on the rollout of the redesigned naira notes, adding that the daily cash withdrawal limit will eventually be raised and removed as time goes on.

9) The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Presidential Candidate, former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar Campaign Organization, has claimed that the All Progressives Congress () Presidential candidate, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is to blame for naira scarcity. Atiku’s campaign also described Tinubu as the real enemy of Nigerians insisting that “Tinubu is the mastermind of the new naira notes crunch who had made the people suffer untold hardship ever known in our national history”.

10) The Katsina State Police Command has confirmed the deaths of 41 members of local vigilance groups known as “Yansakai” in an ambush by terrorists in Yargoje forest. This was contained in a statement issued to newsmen on Friday in Katsina by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Gambo Isah.
