Rivers To Join S/Court Suit Against Naira Swap Deadline

The Rivers State Government has said that it will join the suit filed at the Supreme Court to stop the Central Bank of Nigeria () from enforcing the naira swap deadline.

Governor Nyesom Wike said this yesterday in Central Abua, where the Rivers State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) started its campaign for Abua/Odual LGA.

 

1) The International Monetary Fund and the World Bank have asked the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, to extend the time limit for old Naira Notes. The advice of the international groups was the same as what the Supreme Court said when it ruled against the deadline of Friday.

2) Senator Peter Nwaboshi, who represents Delta North in the National Assembly, was found guilty of money laundering and sentenced to seven years in prison by the Court of Appeal in Lagos seven months ago. On Wednesday, he was sent to the Ikoyi Custodial Centre to start his prison term. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission said that Nwaoboshi had been on the run.

4) The Federal Government asked the Supreme Court yesterday to throw out a case that tried to stop old naira notes from being used after February 10. In a preliminary objection filed by his lawyers Mahmud Magaji and Tijanni Gazali on Wednesday, the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) said that the Supreme Court did not have the power to hear the case.

5) On Wednesday, former President Olusegun Obasanjo said he hoped that nothing would stop the general elections that are set to take place on February 25 and March 11. Obasanjo spoke while he was hosting the members of the Board of Trustees (BoT) of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) at his penthouse in Ogun State.

6) Yesterday, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, the head of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), gave a report to the Federal Executive Council (FEC) at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. He went to a meeting of the federal cabinet led by President Muhammadu Buhari 17 days before the election for president.

8) The Federal Government said yesterday that will start flying soon because the planes are ready and have been painted in the company’s colors. Senator Hadi Sirika, who is the Minister of Aviation, told State House correspondents this at the end of the weekly FEC meeting, which was led by President Muhammadu Buhari in the Council Chamber of the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

9) The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) said that the general elections on February 25 and March 11 would happen as planned.
