Nigeria’s longest-serving monarch, Davies-Agba of cross River state, dies after 64-year reign

His Royal Majesty, Joseph Davies-Agba, the paramount traditional ruler of Obudu Local Government Area in the state of Cross River, has passed away, as confirmed by his family.

On Sunday in Calabar, Davies-Agba’s death was announced in a statement by his son, Mr. Kjay Jedy-Agba.

“It is with great sadness that I inform you of the passing of my cherished father, His Royal Majesty, Joseph Davies-Agba, OON, the “Uti Item III of Utugwang, Uti Ukani I of Obudu, Paramount Ruler of Obudu Local Government Area, and Chancellor of the University of Cross River State.

“His accession to the traditional throne occurred 64 years ago, making him likely the longest-serving traditional ruler in Africa.

“Given his status as a king, we, the immediate family, may not be privy to all the details of his final funeral protocol.

“We are compelled to adhere to the customs of our people in all events leading up to his funeral,” the statement read.

The statement explained that the public would be informed of funeral details as soon as the traditional institution concluded them.

“As difficult as this time is for the family, please continue to keep us in your prayers,” the statement continued.
