Northern elders Forum open up on ‘endorsing’ Peter Obi-Datti

The spokesperson for the Northern Elders Forum (NEF), Dr. Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, stated on Saturday, seven days before the 2023 presidential election, that the group will not be compelled to endorse Peter Obi-Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed.

Former Senator Datti Baba-Ahmed is the younger brother of the NEF’s spokesperson.

While many Nigerian commentators have expressed dissatisfaction with the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who have governed the country for a combined 24 years, Labour Party candidates are viewed as leaders who can perform better than the two major parties (PDP).

Southern and Middle Belt Leaders Forum (SMBLF) and Afenifere have endorsed Obi as their preferred candidate for the presidential election on February 25, whereas NEF has chosen to remain neutral. Baba-Ahmed supported their choice.

“I tolerate requests that NEF or I endorse Obi-Datti or declare our position immediately. I understand that others believe we have influence.

However, we do not owe anyone our loyalty, nor will we choose what others demand of us. If exercising choice offends some individuals, too bad,” the prominent statesman wrote on his Twitter account.
