Obi highlighted that the assurance that the rights of both the high and low in society will be protected and upheld by impartial judges in transparent courts is crucial for maintaining citizens’ loyalty and trust in democracy.

However, he expressed concern that when the fairness and transparency of the judiciary are in question, it poses a significant threat to the rule of law. He stated, “Once ordinary people lose faith in the fairness of the judiciary, the rule of law is threatened. With it, faith in democracy comes under threat as well.”

According to Obi, a society is endangered when the rule of the powerful and the wealthy supersedes the rule of law. He warned against a scenario where justice becomes a commodity exchanged between the rich and powerful and a corrupt group of judiciary officials.

Peter Obi’s statement comes amidst allegations against President Bola Tinubu regarding discrepancies in his educational certificates, particularly one from Chicago State University. Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), had requested these documents to support his allegations of certificate forgery against Tinubu.
