Rivers APC in Confrontation with National Chairman Over Appointment of Wike Loyalists.

Rivers APC has taken a firm stance against the decision of the party’s national chairman, Abdullahi Ganduje, for appointing individuals known to be loyalists of Governor Wike.

Emeka Beke, the embattled Chairman of the All Progressives Congress in Rivers State, has vehemently urged Ganduje to reconsider the National Working Committee’s decision to dissolve the party leadership in the state. Beke, speaking in Port Harcourt on Thursday, asserted that the term of the party’s executive in the state has not yet expired.

The dissolution of the Rivers APC executives was announced by the Ganduje-led APC National Working Committee in Abuja on Wednesday. In place of the dissolved executives, a caretaker committee, headed by Chief Tony Okocha, was appointed to oversee the party’s activities in the state for a duration of six months.

Chief Tony Okocha, the appointed head of the caretaker committee, is known to be an associate of former Peoples Democratic Party Governor, Nyesom Wike, who has aligned himself nationally with the APC.

This move has sparked controversy, especially considering that President Bola Tinubu appointed Wike of the PDP as Rivers minister, bypassing APC members, including Tonye Cole, the party’s governorship candidate in the 2023 general elections.

Responding to the decision of the party’s national leadership, Emeka, the ousted chairman of the Rivers APC, argued that, according to the party’s constitution, only the National Executive Committee (NEC) has the authority to dissolve an elected state executive committee.

He stated, “What does the constitution of the party say? Only NEC has the moral right. I am surprised the NWC said it has that power. I don’t think there is any time the NEC gave them (NWC) the power to do that. It is so shocking and surprising.”

This development sets the stage for a potential power struggle within the Rivers APC as different factions grapple with the leadership decisions made at the national level.
