Super Falcons Clinch Qualification for 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations

 

In a commanding display of skill and determination, the Super Falcons of Nigeria have secured their spot in the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON). The eleven-time African champions sealed their qualification by overpowering Cape Verde 7-1 on aggregate in the final round of qualifiers.

Led by coach Justine Madugu, the Super Falcons dominated the Cape Verdean side with a resounding 5-0 victory in the first leg held in Abuja on Friday. They followed up this impressive performance with another triumph, defeating Cape Verde 2-1 at the Estádio Nacional de Cabo Verde in Praia on Tuesday.

Despite an early setback, with Cape Verde taking the lead in the eighth minute through Ivania Moreira, the Falcons displayed resilience. Esther Okoronkwo leveled the score with a remarkable solo effort in the 60th minute, turning the tide in Nigeria’s favor. The comeback was solidified in stoppage time, with Rasheedat Ajibade securing the victory.

This win extends Nigeria’s remarkable record of participating in every edition of the WAFCON since its inception in 1991, showcasing the team’s consistent excellence in women’s football on the continent.
