President Bola Ahmed Tinubu Reaffirms Commitment to Nigerians Amidst Challenges.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reassured Nigerians that he remains dedicated to fulfilling the promises he made, despite the current challenges faced by the country. Speaking on Wednesday during his address to Muslims to commemorate the New Islamic Year, Tinubu emphasized the importance of embracing the values of patience, perseverance, and faithfulness, which were exemplified by Prophet Muhammad.

Tinubu’s message comes at a time when Nigerians are grappling with the soaring price of petrol, which has further exacerbated the cost of living in the country. In his inaugural speech on May 29, 2023, Tinubu had announced the removal of subsidies on petrol, deeming them no longer feasible.

Subsequently, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) adjusted the prices per liter across the nation, with rates reaching as high as N617 per liter in the federal capital territory (FCT), Abuja, and N568 in Lagos on Tuesday.

However, the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) has vehemently rejected the new pump price of N617 per liter. NLC President Joe Ajaero criticized the government’s handling of the situation, claiming that Nigerians are being deceived regarding petrol pricing. Ajaero asserted that the masses are being unjustly punished and questioned the rationale behind government interventions and court injunctions if the matter does not concern them.

In response to the price increase, NNPCL attributed the situation to “market forces at play.” Mele Kyari, the Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPCL, explained that the issue was not a shortage of supply but rather the natural impact of demand and supply dynamics within the marketing value chain. He stated that fuel importers were gaining confidence in the system, leading to price fluctuations.

While Nigerians bear the burden of subsidy removal, Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) Senator George Akume urged them to remain resilient, assuring them of a brighter future. During a meeting with the North Central People’s Forum (NCPF), Akume emphasized that the removal of oil subsidy would eventually result in improved living conditions for citizens.

“The well-being of Nigerians will significantly improve following the initial impact on the cost of living caused by the removal of oil subsidy,” Akume affirmed. “This administration is determined not to disappoint Nigerians. If we make mistakes, hold us accountable.”

Akume further praised President Tinubu’s bold steps, stating that they have positively influenced the economy and instilled confidence in policymakers both locally and internationally, signaling the government’s commitment to progress.
