Bola Tinubu’s Ongoing Efforts to Block U.S. Agencies from Releasing Confidential Files as Deadline Approaches.
President Bola Tinubu finds himself in yet another legal battle, this time seeking to block the release of records related to him by U.S. agencies, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA).
Court documents obtained by Peoples Gazette reveal that Mr. Tinubu’s legal team in the United States has filed motions to participate in an ongoing Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) lawsuit against U.S. organizations.

These records are believed to contain information that may shed light on questions regarding the President’s true identity and his activities spanning several decades.
Christopher Carmichael, an attorney who previously represented Mr. Tinubu in a case involving records in Chicago, filed the motion on October 18, 2023.
In the motion, it was stated that Mr. Carmichael is an attorney in good standing, qualified to appear in the FOIA lawsuit taking place in Washington D.C.

The motion further noted, “This motion is supported by the Declaration of Christopher Carmichael. As set forth in Mr. Carmichael’s declaration, he is admitted and an active member in good standing.”
It remains unclear why President Tinubu believes he can prevent U.S. agencies from complying with federal disclosure regulations.

Mr. Carmichael did not provide immediate comments regarding this matter, and Oluwole Afolabi, the President’s lead attorney in the U.S., refrained from commenting until the case officially commences.
The legal team is working diligently to prepare a comprehensive argument, with a goal of being able to present their case before the October 31 deadline.
The lawsuit involving President Tinubu came to his attention when The Gazette reported on September 11 that the FBI had agreed to release approximately 2,500 pages of response information regarding the Nigerian leader.
This followed the revelation that Mr. Tinubu had been investigated for narcotics trafficking in the U.S. during the 1990s, leading to a federal court order in Chicago that compelled him to forfeit $460,000.
The FBI had announced its intention to release these records to Aaron Greenspan, the proprietor of PlainSite, a website that advocates for anti-corruption and transparency in public service.
US Authorities Launch Criminal Probe into Tinubu’s Chicago State University Certificate
Other U.S. institutions, such as the State Department, Internal Revenue Service, and Drug Enforcement Administration, have also expressed readiness to provide thousands of pages of records related to Bola Tinubu.
This legal maneuver comes two weeks after President Tinubu lost a contentious battle to prevent a federal court in Chicago from releasing his academic records to Atiku Abubakar, his primary political rival in Nigeria. The school ultimately released the records, which confirmed that a certain Bola Tinubu was admitted in 1977.
However, the institution could not authenticate the certificate he used to run for office in Nigeria in June 2022, based on a cursory examination of the records.
