In a recent development, the West African Examination Council (WAEC) has taken action against certain secondary schools in Abia State for their involvement in examination malpractice. The affected schools have been delisted from participating in WAEC exams, marking a significant step by the regional body to uphold the integrity of its assessments.

The disclosure was made by the Commissioner for Education, Professor Uche Eme Uche, during a press briefing in Umuahia, the state capital. Professor Uche revealed that the state government was informed of this decision by WAEC, emphasizing the seriousness of the matter.

While the commissioner refrained from disclosing the names of the affected schools, she noted that the majority of them were private institutions. She emphasized the government’s stance against any actions that tarnish the state’s reputation and announced that the operational licenses of the implicated schools would be revoked as a deterrent to others.

Professor Uche highlighted the state’s support for WAEC’s actions, citing their importance in combating the degradation of academic standards perpetuated by unscrupulous operators. She lamented that despite previous warnings and closures of some of these schools due to misconduct, they persisted in engaging in dishonest practices.
