Gunmen Kill Catholic Priest In Edo

 

Reverend Father Charles Igechi of the Archdiocese of Benin was allegedly gunned down by assailants in Benin City, Edo State.

 

On his way to his assigned location, the priest was reportedly shot by gunmen on Wednesday along Agbor Road in the Ikhueniro region of Benin.

A Reverend Father from the Archdiocese of Benin, who requested anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the incident, confirmed toEjes Gist News Nigeria that the priest was murdered.

 

He stated, “He was indeed murdered. There was nobody with him when he was murdered by gunmen.”

He stated that the body of the priest was discovered on the bypass axis of the Benin Agbor road, where he had been dumped.

Chidi Nwanbuzor, the spokesperson for the Edo State Command, could not be reached via phone calls and a text message to his cell phone.

 

The Catholic Archbishop of Benin City, Augustine Akubeze, stated that the issue had been reported to the police and that he hoped those responsible for the illegal act would be brought to justice.

 

Akubeze stated in a Thursday condolence statement that the priest, who was ordained in August 2022, was shot in the back.

The statement read, “With profound sadness and sorrow in our hearts, we wish to inform you of the passing of one of our priests in the Archdiocese, Rev. Fr. Charles Onomhoale Igechi, who was ordained on August 13, 2022, and who was the Vice Principal of St. Michael College, Ikhueniro until his death.

 

“With great astonishment, we learned this morning that he was shot and killed on his way back to his place of employment on June 7, 2023, and that his remains were discovered by Boundary Street in Ikpoba Hill, Ikpoba Okha Local Government Area, Edo State.

 

“We therefore request your prayers for the peaceful repose of his soul.” Tomorrow, June 9, 2023, at 10:00am, there will be a Mass for the repose of the soul of Reverend Fr. Charlies Onomhoale igechi in the chapel of the Bishop Kelly Pastoral Centre.

 

“I commit everyone to the maternal intercession of Our Lady of Sorrow. May God continue to guide and protect all the faithful in the Archdiocese of Benin City, and may the soul of Rev. Fr. Charles Igechi rest in peace in the arms of our risen Lord. Amen.”
